ABOUT NYC BIRD ALLIANCE

NYC Bird Alliance is a grassroots community that works for the protection of wild birds and habitat in the five boroughs, improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. For over 40 years, NYC Bird Alliance's conservation programs have studied and advocated on behalf of the City's wild birds. Working with a network of volunteers and scientists as part of programs such as Project Safe Flight and Waterbirds of New York Harbor, we protect birds and preserve their habitat, from marshlands and nesting islands for herons and egrets to woodland park areas so important to migrating and nesting species.

EFFECTS OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT AT NIGHT ON BIRDS
New York City is one of the most light-polluted cities in the world, which affects millions of birds that pass through the City during their migration seasons. Artificial light pollution not only has a negative effect on humans but also on many wildlife species, especially birds. Birds rely on natural light cues for their migration, navigation, communication, and reproduction. Artificial light pollution can disrupt these behaviors and cause negative consequences for their survival and well-being.

LIGHTS OUT LEGISLATION
Following the landmark passage of citywide bird-friendly design legislation in late 2019, NYC Bird Alliance has shifted its advocacy focus towards the creation and passage of legislation that would require a reduction in artificial light at night during spring and fall migration. In 2023, NYC Bird Alliance hopes to pass Re-intro 265, which would limit nighttime illumination of the exterior and interior of commercial and mercantile buildings during peak migration season.

TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS!
Nearly one billion birds die from building collisions in the U.S. each year. Artificial light contributes to those numbers, as it disrupts nighttime bird migration. Be part of the solution with NYC Bird Alliance’s Lights Out initiative. Save birds and promote energy efficiency by turning off your lights after 11pm.
