About NYC Bird Alliance

NYC Bird Alliance (formerly NYC Audubon) was founded in 1979 to protect the City's wild birds and habitat, and to engage all New Yorkers in enjoying nature and taking action to protect it. Led by its own independent board of directors and staff, NYC Bird Alliance is an independent nonprofit organization that affiliates with the National Audubon Society as an urban chapter. We work to promote the conservation, understanding, and enjoyment of wild birds and their habitats in the City through:

Our professional scientists study the dangers facing the birds that live in and migrate through New York City including reflective glass, loss of habitat, and climate change. We also engage our dedicated grassroots network of community scientists and volunteers in collecting data to provide innovative solutions that help birds.

Engaging in advocacy work on conservation issues in New York City, often in collaboration with partner organizations,  our successes include the “Buffer the Bay” program to preserve priority lands around Jamaica Bay and successfully passing Int. 1482 (the bird-friendly materials bill) as Local Law 15 in 2021.

Conducting over 300 educational programs a year, which include diverse and interesting bird-watching outings, lecture series, bird counts and surveys, and seasonal classes (from birding basics to advanced classes to hone ID skills for sparrows, warblers, raptors, and more).
