Why Green Spaces Matter
Green roofs, gardens, and bioswales do more than just beautify the City—they’re essential for making New York City more resilient to climate change. These green spaces cool urban areas, reduce flooding, improve air quality, and provide a peaceful escape from city life. But they also do something even more vital: they support wildlife. Healthy wildlife populations, from birds to pollinators, are crucial for maintaining vibrant urban ecosystems. They help with pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control—key functions that keep our city’s green spaces thriving. Supporting biodiversity means supporting a livable city for all.

Google’s Green Roofs
NYC Bird Alliance is proud to partner with Google in the largest green roof bird monitoring project in New York City. Javits Center Network of Green Roofs
For over a decade, NYC Bird Alliance has worked closely with the Javits Center on its transformation into a paragon of sustainability and a haven for wildlife. The Javits Center boasts one of the largest green roofs in the U.S., spanning 6.75 acres and serving as critical habitat for bats, insects, and over 70 species of local and migratory birds. The roof plays a crucial role in stormwater management by retaining over 75% of rainwater and mitigating nearly 7 million gallons of runoff annually, while also reducing the urban heat island effect and lowering the building’s heat flux by 46%

Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages
Beginning in 2016, NYC Bird Alliance partnered with Newtown Creek Alliance, Broadway Stages, and Alive Structures to create a series of green roofs at Kingsland Wildflowers in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. NYC Bird Alliance scientists documented rapid changes in bird, insect, and bat communities at the roof after its installation. The space also offers stunning views of Manhattan and the surrounding industrial landscape, creating a unique space for environmental education and community engagement.
